Don't promise something you can't deliver

When it comes to sales, its all about selling your product or services to whoever and no matter what. May be not everybody thinks like that, but most do. That's why there are lots of articles on the internet about promising something you can't deliver. Specially when it comes to sales we all think of selling more to achieve sales targets and make more money. Not only in sales, you sometimes make promises to your superiors to build trust among them, but what will happen if you fail to deliver something that you promised? Will it make a positive effect on your sales target or your reputation? You will end up repaying a good portion of the money you got and the client will never consider getting your service again. And if it is to your superior, only god knows how they will react. When it comes to customers, you know how hard it is to get a client to pay for your service. Losing a client may burn a big hole in your pocket. Following advises will keep you away from promising things you can't deliver next time when you have that important presentation.
Can you really make a promise? Before you promise something to a client or to your boss may be, make sure you have the authority or whether you can make that promise. If you have doubts, never promise anything just to impress the client or your superiors, because at the end of the day you or your team will have to take the blame for it.
Don't promise believing your gut feelings or faith
To start with, remember you are not god. You don't have control over everything, so don't put your reputation at risk. Keep your faith for yourself and think logically before you act.
Believing in others or trusting others too much
Believing or trusting someone is not a bad thing, but can you really rely on other people just because you trust them? What will happen if the people you trust are not the correct people to get the work done? Make sure you have correct resources to get the job done before making a promise.
Do your homework
Give it a good think and do a research on the customer's requirement. Sometimes customers come to you when the others say no to them. And if the others say no, then there is something to think about. Don't try to be a hero in front of the client, be wise.
Finally, think about the history of you
History will teach you much more lessons. Have you ever experienced not being able to deliver something you promised to a client? If so it's a good lesson to learn for you not to do the same mistake again. After all that's why it is called lessons learned, you don't want to fall into the same ditch you fell at night during the day.
By saying these things I don't discourage you with making promises. Remember, every promise you fulfill will help you to associate your name with positivity and trust. Making promises you can keep is an important key that helps you open many doors leading to your success. So make sure your promises are really achievable. If you do so, it will not only help you building trust among the others, also it will also help building your self confidant.
